The Reis Magos fort was built in 1551 by the Portuguese rulers as a residence for viceroys and later converted to a fortress to protect Goa at the narrowest point at the mouth of the Mandovi estuary. The Fort stands on the north bank of the Mandovi at Reis Magos, and is very much visible from Panjim on the other side of the Mandovi river. It was enlarged subsequently on different occasions, and finally re-erected in 1707. It was also occupied briefly by the British army. In 1900 the fort lost its defensive role and was used solely as a prison until recently in 1993 when the prison was closed down and the fort abandoned. In 2007, a tripartite agreement was signed between the Govt of Goa, INTACH and the Hamlyn Trust to restore the fort as a Cultural Centre. The Fort was thrown open on 5th June 2012 with a new restored look to as it was in 1707.
