The Basilica of Bom Jesus is perhaps Goa's most famous church and among the most revered by Christians worldwide as it holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. This Jesuit church is India's first basilica, and although partially in ruins it is considered to be a model of simplicity and elegance and one of the best examples of jesuit and baroque architecture. The foundation stone of this remarkably large church was laid on 24 November 1594 and the church was consecrated on 15 May 1605. The interior of the church is built in Mosaico-Corinthian style and is remarkable for its charming simplicity. Located at Old Goa, 10 kilometres east of Panaji, the Bom Jesus Basilica is a World Heritage Monument.
The Basilica of Bom Jesus is one of the most revered churches in Goa and many a couple choose to get married here. The Church can only be used for Roman Catholic Wedding Ceremonies and the church is managed by the Jesuits. The unique architecture and elegant interiors of this monument along with the its miraculous history makes it the most frequented heritage venues for weddings in Goa. It measures 183 ft in length,55 ft in breath, and 61 ft in height. The main altar is 54 ft high and 30 ft broad. The surroundings of the Basilic of Bom Jesus is ideal for wedding photo shoots as well. Although photography inside the Basilica is strictly prohibited.
